American actress and television host Melissa Rivers is engaged, PEOPLE magazine reported in November 2023.

Sources confirm that the daughter of the late Joan Rivers showed off a massive 5.6-carat diamond ring at BravoCon over the weekend. Sources confirm that Melissa said “yes” to her partner of 1.5 years, Steve Mitchel, last month on a beach in Mexico. While the couple was vacationing at the One & Only Mandarina Resort in Mexico, Steve proposed to his fiancée with a stunning, custom-designed ring by Melissa’s best friend, Peter McNeal of McNeal and Grunberg.

According to their story, Steve and Melissa reportedly met at a mental health conference hosted by Didi Hirsch Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. “I’m the co-chair of the board. He was there as a friend of someone else,” the bride-to-be confirmed to PEOPLE. “It’s not often that a complete stranger comes up to me and starts talking. We’ve been together for about a year and a half now.”

“He had the courage to come up and talk to her,” a source revealed to PageSix, “and the rest is history.”

They also added, “[Mitchel] couldn’t be more isolated from the Hollywood world, which is perfect for her.”

“This is a huge step for both of us and I’m still completely shocked, even a month later, but incredibly happy,” Melissa exclusively told PEOPLE. “And more importantly, my mom would approve of the ring. Oh yeah, and Steve too!”

Melissa, who was previously married to John Endicott for five years until they split in 2003, has had a change of heart after years of swearing she would never marry again.

“All my friends joked that I had a pretty good run and was almost there to be single for the rest of my life. That’s something I never believed in my heart that I would do. But, obviously, hell froze over and pigs flew,” Melissa jokingly explained to PEOPLE, “I didn’t see it coming and it wasn’t easy to fool me. Once Steve stuck some smelling salts under my nose when I passed out, I agreed.”

Melissa also confirmed that she and Steve are in no rush to walk down the aisle and have the best day of their lives. “We’re taking baby steps. We haven’t planned anything yet. If we do have a ceremony and party, I can’t imagine it before 2025. I can guarantee it won’t be like my first wedding or anything on that level.”

Additionally, Melissa’s son, Cooper Endicott, also approved of her engagement and their relationship after Steve called Cooper.

The son of George Mitchel and Susan Mitchel, Steve Mitchel was one of four children born to his parents. His mother, Susan, was born on January 9, 1933, in Los Angeles. His parents met on a blind date in 1956 and married on April 27, 1957. Inseparable for 64 years, they raised a large and close-knit family. Home was where she truly shined and built her family’s foundation.

An important aspect of Susan’s life was her love of the outdoors, sports and adventure. Her early years were spent in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she developed a lifelong passion for skiing. She loved skiing and passed this love on to her children and grandchildren.

As President of the PTA at 3rd Street School, Susan worked hard to make everyone’s experience a solid foundation for their lives, and was famous for appearing in a helicopter when entering the school, as documented on the front page of the Larchmont Chronicle.

Sadly, Susan passed away on 2 March 2021 after a long battle with dementia. She is survived by her husband George and three other children, Clay Mitchel (Staci), Margaret Cook (Bill) and Charlotte Roach (Brent).
