90 Day Fiance: The Other Way star Daniele Gates has a stand-up comedian son named Thomas Vaethroeder. “When I was 21, I became a single mother,” Daniele said in a season 2 episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Love in Paradise“After I had my son, I would choose men who I knew would be good father figures, but not necessarily good partners for me. So after a series of really bad relationships, I took a five-year break to really focus on myself.”

Thomas has also talked about his mother’s reality TV show on one of his shows. In August 2022, Thomas made light of her time on 90 Day Fiance and her love for Dominicans during a performance at the Broadway Comedy Club. Together with her husband Yohan Geronimo, she currently lives in the Dominican Republic.

“You know that show. 90 Day Fiance?” Thomas asked the audience. “If you haven’t heard of it, the concept [is] Two people meet, they have a brief relationship, and then one of them gets engaged to the other in order to get a green card.”

Thomas told his audience, “My mom is on this show right now! The way it worked out in her case, she was on vacation, she was minding her own business, and a Dominican jumped out of the bushes! And the rest is history.”

After admitting he hadn’t watched the show, Thomas revealed details about his mother’s previous dating attempts. “I know my mother likes Dominicans,” he said. “That doesn’t surprise me. I know that from experience.”

“I grew up with a lot of Dominicans,” Thomas continued. “My mom lived with another Dominican for a while, and he raised me for a few years.”

Shane comes from a family where teaching was a “family business.” He worked as a social studies teacher at a public school called The School For Exining Essential Questions of Sustainability (SEEQS), which was initiated by his great-grandmother Ethel Day, who was interested in Hawaii.

“The family story is that Hawaii (the Department of Education), as it is today, hired teachers from the mainland,” Shane said.

Shane’s great-grandmother Ethel, a Chicago native, spent her entire life in Honolulu, Hawaii, as a public school teacher. Thomas and his siblings are the fourth generation of Hawaiian teachers in their family. “Her college classmate was so excited about the idea that she convinced my great-grandmother to go along,” Shane says. “And then at the last minute, her friend backed down and said, ‘No, I can’t move that far.’”

Shane was born on Oahu and raised on Maui. His path to becoming a public school teacher—his younger brother, Thomas, also teaches English at Prince David Kawananakoa Middle School in Honolulu—followed a long family tradition. His grandmother, Mary Helen King (Ethel’s only child by her first husband), was also a teacher, as was Mary’s husband, Garner Hall Ivey, a civil engineer who became an executive at Alexander & Baldwin and a former wrestling coach at Baldwin High in Maui.

Shane’s father, Terrence Albritton, is a California native who broke the world record in the shot put as a transfer student at UH Manoa — and later became a strength coach and physical education teacher at St. Anthony’s School in Maui.

After graduating from high school and enrolling at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New York on a football scholarship, Shane stayed there for a year before returning to Hawaii, where he worked in hotel security and attended Maui Community College. There, he met a political science professor who, he says, influenced his career choice.

Shane also worked as a tour guide on the island of Maui and has traveled the world teaching English to adults in countries like Spain, Brazil, and Portugal, where he first discovered his passion for education.

Shane has been married to his wife Madison Furlong since June 30, 2019. They have a daughter together.
