NFL star Caleb Farley’s father, Robert Farley, was killed in a massive explosion at the player’s North Carolina home. Robert Farley, 61, was found dead after first responders searched the rubble of the multimillion-dollar home. The Tennessee Titans linebacker was not home at the time of the explosion. No foul play is suspected; the investigation is focused solely on the home’s natural gas line.

Christian Rogers, a 25-year-old family friend who was also at the home, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a statement released by Iredell County. All of the cars parked outside the 6,300-square-foot (585-square-meter) lakeside home in Mooresville, a Charlotte suburb, were destroyed.

“There was a lot of devastation,” Iredell County Fire and Emergency Management Director Kent Greene told the Tennessean. “There was nothing left of the structure except a portion of the wall.” Caleb was found at the scene talking to authorities after the explosion Tuesday morning.

Local news outlet Queen City News was told by neighbors that they heard an explosion and smelled gas.

“A loud bang, about five minutes to midnight,” said neighbor Clay Wild. “I couldn’t believe it.”

“I know he lost his mother at a young age,” said teammate Kevin Byard. “He’s faced a lot of adversity. It’s tragic. It’s an unimaginable tragedy.”

Son Caleb, who played for Maiden and now plays in the NFL, said he knew his father had a great reputation.

“Growing up, I knew my dad was loved in this community, I knew my dad was respected,” Caleb said. “And that’s one reason why you see this family so loved.”

Tennessee Titans linebacker Caleb said his father “wasn’t supposed to go like this” after the elder Farley was killed Tuesday in an explosion at Caleb’s $3 million North Carolina home. “Dad, you’re a legend. I love you,” Caleb said in a series of Instagram videos following the tragedy.

“My brother always told me, like man, that guy out there, homeless or whatever, you give him the same respect you give a rich person because he has the same value as a rich person in this world,” Elijah added. “My brother… if he saw anybody in need, he would take out his bag and give them, like, something to eat, and never owe them anything in return. He didn’t do it for an agenda, he did it because it was genuine, that’s how we were raised by mom and dad.”

Meanwhile, Robert has four sisters: Kathy F. Lewis and her husband Glenn Lewis, Sandra F. Phelps and her husband Patrick Phelps, Jacquelyn F. Davis and her husband William Davis, and Cynthia F. Robinson and her husband Tracy Robinson.

Robert Farley’s work

Robert Farley played on the Maiden High School football team that won the state championship. “They said Robert was faster than Caleb,” said head coach Will Byrne. “To this day, there’s still an argument about who was faster.” But Elijah decided to quit football and go into barbering to help him.

Elijah had a large clientele thanks to his talent as a barber. He claimed that when Robert saw how hard he had to work to keep up while staying up late every night, he came to the conclusion that something had to give up.

“My brother, fed up with seeing me struggle, stopped his lucrative career, put everything aside and went to barber school just to be able to help me.”

In Newton, Robert Farley ran a barber shop. According to his brother, he often helped hungry customers who came to his barber shop, but he did it in such a way that the customers didn’t realize he was helping.

“If we are ever blessed in life, give back, it is better to give than to receive, that is just the mentality my brother has with the community,” Elijah said. “That is why he is so loved because he will give the shirt off his back.”
