The youthful prince of Bel-Air theme song we all know and love was not the original plan.
In the December 2 episode of VICE’s docu-series Black Comedy in America, Will Smith revealed that the first proposed theme for the iconic sitcom was met with harsh criticism — no one The other is iconic music producer Quincy Jones, who actually composed it. Despite Jones’ impressive performance, Smith admitted he was not a fan of the song. “I hate it,” he admitted. Turning to DJ Jazzy Jeff for advice, Smith had difficulty voicing his opinion. “I can’t say anything,” he told his collaborator. “What should I say?”
DJ Jazzy Jeff came up with a solution: the duo should create their own version. They created a demo telling the show’s story and introduced it to Jones. To Smith’s surprise, Jones accepted their job. “He said, ‘That’s good. Mine’s a bad thing,'” Smith shared, adding that Jones admitted their version captured the spirit of the show.
Smith explained that the original song did not fit the vibe of the 1990s sitcom. The collaboration between Smith and Jones began in 1989, when Benny Medina introduced the product. Fresh Prince concept for Smith and introduced him to Jones – the executive producer – at a house party. Jones’ enthusiasm for Smith’s music videos led him to suggest using his rap moniker, Fresh Princeas the title of the program.
Smith’s journey to stardom began from there. Jones gave him a script, asked him to audition on the spot, and within three months production was underway. The youthful prince of Bel-Air is underway.
Jones passed away on November 3 at the age of 91. On Instagram, Smith honored his mentor with a heartfelt tribute and a tribute photo.
“Quincy Jones was the true definition of a mentor, a father and a friend,” Smith wrote. “He showed me the greatest parts of myself. He protected me, nurtured me. He encouraged me. He inspired me. He tested me when needed. He let me use his wings until mine are strong enough to fly.”
