Early life
Willie Lee Wilson was born on June 16, 1948. He grew up on a sharecropping farm in Louisiana. Wilson received a seventh-grade education. Wilson went on to earn his Doctor of Divinity and Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from Mt. Carmel Theological Seminary.
Wilson left home at the age of thirteen and took jobs in the cotton and sugarcane fields for twenty cents an hour. Before moving to Chicago in 1965, Wilson spent time in Miami and New York City.
