early life
Chen Cuichang, also known by her stage name Xiangyun, was born in Singapore on October 27, 1961. She is the eldest of three daughters and one son. Due to her poor family background, her childhood was not happy.
The situation was so bad that her parents didn’t even have money for food. Xiang Yun spent most of her childhood living with her grandmother in a small apartment.
To make matters worse, her biological parents also lived in the same apartment, but they had to move out after giving birth to their two daughters.
As the eldest daughter in the family, Xiangyun did a lot of housework, such as washing clothes for her younger brothers and sisters and cleaning the house. These adversities did not break her will, but instead made her stronger.
She holds a diploma in Nutrition and Flower Therapy from the National University of Singapore.
Personal life
Xiang Yun’s husband is former MediaCorp actor Chen Zhimeng. They met on the set of Pretty Woman. They got married after a short relationship, and the relationship attracted widespread media attention because it is not common for celebrities to not make their marriage public in the local entertainment industry.
They have two children, a boy and a girl, son Chen Xi and daughter Chen Yixin.

Xiang Yun was one of the first graduates of the SBC drama training class. She began acting in children’s plays in 1980. In 1983, she starred in the TV series “Double Happiness” and the movie “All That Glitters Is Not Gold”.
She rose to fame in 1984 for her role as Ah Mei in the TV series Heaven Questions. Ah Mei was the lover of Huang Wenyong, who played the role of Ah Shui.
Xiang Yun and Huang Wenyong were listed as the five most popular on-screen duos and one of the five most memorable drama characters of the past 25 years in the 2007 Star Awards Anniversary Special.
She played Singaporean army heroine Elizabeth Chua in the 1997 war drama The Price of Peace. She took a brief break from acting after giving birth to her second child.
Since returning to mainstream TV dramas in 2000, Xiang Yun has played key roles in many well-known MediaCorp productions such as Double Happiness, Portrait of Family, The Little Nyonya and Family Ties.
Despite facing competition from younger actresses, Xiang Yun’s popularity remains high. She won the “Best Supporting Actress” award four times in 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2009.
