Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy, commonly known as YSR, is an Indian politician who served as the 14th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 2004 to 2009.

He is the leader of the Indian National Congress party and a four-term member of the Lok Sabha from the Kadapa constituency.

He was also a five-time member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Pulivendula constituency, winning every election he contested.

He was known for his mass appeal, welfare programmes and ambitious padayatra, a 1,500 km walk across the state to interact with people and understand their problems.

Early life and education

YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who will turn 75 in 2024, was born on 8 July 1949 in Pulivendula, a small town in Cuddapah district of Madras (now Andhra Pradesh).

He belongs to the Reddy community, a dominant caste group in the area.

His father, YS Raja Reddy, was a wealthy landowner and a local Congress party leader. His mother, YS Jayamma, was a devout Christian who converted from Hinduism. He had a younger brother, YS Vivekananda Reddy, who also became a politician.

YSR grew up in a politically active family and developed an interest in politics from an early age. His father, who was close to Congress supporters like K. Brahmananda Reddy and P. V. Narasimha Rao, influenced him.

He was also inspired by national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. He studied at local schools in Pulivendula and later joined Loyola College in Chennai for his secondary education.

Personal life

YSR married YS Vijayalakshmi, his uncle’s daughter, in 1971. The couple had two children: a son named YS Jaganmohan Reddy and a daughter named YS Sharmila. Both followed in their father’s footsteps and entered politics.

Jaganmohan Reddy is currently the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and the president of the YSR Congress Party, a regional party he founded in 2011 after splitting from the Congress Party.

Sharmila Reddy is also the leader of the YSR Congress Party and recently announced her intention to form a new political party in Telangana.

Death

YSR died in a tragic helicopter crash on 2 September 2009, while he was on his way to Chittoor district to launch a new welfare scheme.

His helicopter, a Bell 430, went missing in the Nallamala forest area due to bad weather and poor visibility. The helicopter was later found crashed on the Rudrakonda hilltop, 40 nautical miles from Kurnool.

All five people on board, including YSR, his secretary, the security chief and the two pilots, were declared dead at the scene.

The Chief Minister’s Office and the Andhra Pradesh government confirmed the news of his death, leaving the entire state and country shocked and saddened.

YSR’s death has triggered an outpouring of emotions and condolences from people who poured onto the streets and airports to pay their last respects to their beloved leader.

His body was brought to Hyderabad and kept at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium for public viewing.

Thousands of people, including political leaders, celebrities and commoners, attended his funeral, held at his family estate in Idupulapaya, Kadapa district. He was buried with full state honours next to his father’s grave.
