Zwelini Lawrence Mkhize, 68, is a South African physician, legislator and politician, born on 2 February 1956.
He is known internationally and locally as Zweli Mkhize.
He was born in Willowfontein, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
He served as Minister of Health from May 2019 until his resignation on 5 August 2021.
As Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize is tasked with keeping South Africans safe from the COVID 19 pandemic by implementing safety measures to mitigate and eradicate the virus.
In 2018, just before becoming Minister of Health in 2019, he served as Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
Zweli Mkhize was the fifth Prime Minister of KwaZulu-Natal from 2009 to 2013. Zweli Mkhize is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and was the party’s Treasurer-General from 2012 to 2017.

Early life
Zweli Mkhize was born on 2 February 1956 in Willowfontein, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
He has both siblings and a younger brother. He is the first born in a family of seven children.
It is not known where he attended primary school. He attended Dlangezwa High School and completed his medical degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal at the age of 26.
He interned and completed his training at McCord Hospital in 1983. He was deported to Swaziland, but later moved to Zimbabwe.
He returned to South Africa in 1991 and began working at Themba Hospital in the former Eastern Transvaal.
Education
Zweli Mkhize attended Dlangezwa High School in South Africa. After graduating from Dlangezwa, he enrolled at the University of Kwazulu-Natal to complete his MBChB degree, graduating in 1982 at the age of 26.
After graduating from medical school, he did his internship at McCord Hospital in 1983. Then in 1984, he was admitted to work at Edendale Hospital, located in Pietermaritzburg.
Career
Zweli Mkhize began his medical career at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg in 1984 following a successful internship at McCord Hospital.
After returning from exile in Swaziland, where he settled in Zimbabwe, he returned to South Africa in 1991 and worked at Themba Hospital in the former Eastern Transvaal.
He served as president of the ANC after winning the elections held in 2008. He was re-elected to the same position in 2012. From 2009 to 2017, he was chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Zweli Mkhize was the Prime Minister of KwaZulu-Natal from 2009 to 2013 and a member of the African National Congress (ANC). He is widely considered to be the fifth Prime Minister of KwaZulu-Natal.
Zweli Mkhize served as the party’s Treasurer-General from 2012 to 2017 and in September 2017 he was appointed President of the African National Congress (ANC).
In 2018, Zweli Mkhize was appointed Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. He was the Minister of Health of South Africa in May 2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic. He remains the current Minister of Health.
