One of the most surprisingly good slasher horror movies to come out of 2023 was Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving. Starring Patrick Dempsey, Ty Olsson, and Gina Gershon, Thanksgiving follows the aftermath of a Black Friday riot and a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes the quiet community of Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the Thanksgiving holiday was born. Thanksgiving earned a Rotten Tomatoes score of 84% and is a great watch this Halloween season.

The 2022 incarnation of Scream is the fifth entry in the franchise, set twenty-five years after the brutal murders caused by Billy Loomis and Stu Macher shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro. Now a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and has begun targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. Following the prior killers’ footsteps, a new Ghostface attacks a high school student named Tara Carpenter. When her sister learns of the attack, she returns and meets with Tara’s old friend group to check on her. However, Ghostface strikes again when they visit the hospital, forcing them to partner with series regulars Dewey Riley, Sidney Prescott, and Gale Weathers to discover the truth behind the original Woodsboro murders and stop the new copycats.

The Scream franchise made a strong entry into the 2020s with the 2022 reboot starring Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. The film has a stacked cast that also features original franchise staples Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette and rising stars Mikey Madison, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Dylan Minnette, and Kyle Gallner. Any Scream movie is perfect for the Halloween season, but this star-stacked entry (which likely won’t be replicated due to the behind-the-scenes issues with the franchise) is a modern slasher must-see.

Starring Mia Goth, the film provides a chilling backdrop and a character study of ambition and isolation gone awry.

As the middle entry of Ti West’s X trilogy, Pearl is arguably the best of the franchise following the divided response from 2024’s MaXXXine. If it wasn’t established already, Pearl really helped to solidify Mia Goth’s status as one of the best modern scream queens and was a triumph for independent horror filmmaking on a budget. Pearl takes place in 1918 and a young woman on the brink of madness pursues a career in entertainment which leads her to a breaking point. The film also stars David Corenswet who plays an alluring film projectionist. The film earned a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%.

Often regarded as one of the best modern horrors of the 21st century, The Wailing has a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 99%. Considered a folk horror movie, The Wailing is written and directed by Na Hong-jin and follows the course of a mysterious illness that starts spreading after a stranger arrives in a village. The filmmaking is masterful and the tension is palpable as the film creates a genuinely terrifying and unsettling atmosphere. The Wailing is undoubtedly one of the greatest horror movies currently on Netflix.

Often considered Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece, Psycho is a near-perfect psychological horror full of innovative twists, camera angles, and an iconic antagonist that has cemented him as an all-time great. Psycho is not always available on streaming services, so catching it this Halloween season on Netflix is a golden opportunity.
