He began rapping at the age of nine, often with his older brother, who had a French braided hairstyle that Rocky later copied.
A$AP Rocky’s father was arrested for drug trafficking when he was 12 and eventually died in 2012. He lost his older brother, Ricky Mayers, when he was 13, when a rival drug dealer killed him.
This heartbreak motivated A$AP Rocky to work harder on his songs.
He began selling drugs to support his family while they bounced around homeless shelters. In 2004, A$AP Rocky was charged with selling cocaine and spent two weeks in jail. While in jail, he met up-and-coming rapper Casanova.
Profession
A$AP Rocky began rapping at a young age, influenced by his brother. After joining the Harlem band ASAP Mob in 2007, he adopted the stage name “ASAP”.
His debut single “Purple Swag” was released in July 2011 and became a huge success in New York, catapulting him to rap stardom. His song “Peso” was leaked online in August 2011 and quickly became a hit on the famous Hot 97 New York radio station.
However, due to the huge success of “Purple Swag”, record companies had taken notice of him and he released a mixtape called “Live. Love”.
A$AP Rocky joined the band before RCA Records and Polo Grounds Music offered him a $3 million contract. He launched his record label, A$AP Worldwide, at the same time as signing. In July 2012, ASAP Rocky performed at the Pitchfork Music Festival. Later that year, he guest-starred on Rihanna’s song “Cockiness (Love It)” at the MTV Video Music Awards.
His solo album Long Live Asap, released in January 2013, not only sold 3 million copies in the United States, but also ranked eighth on the Billboard 100 chart. The album features popular artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, 2 Chainz, Florence Welch, A$AP Ferg and Santigold.
In 2013, A$AP Rocky founded his own clothing line, A$AP, and collaborated with Raf Simons. In 2014, his global representation agreement with William Morris Endeavor was officially announced. He had a brief cameo in the 2014 comedy-drama Dope. The film premiered on June 12 and screened at the Sundance Film Festival the following year.
A$AP Rocky’s short album Flacko Jodye Season was released on the night of his 26th birthday. His rapper friend Juicy J contributed some additional vocals to the record. His second album At.Long.Last.A$AP was released in May 2015. He had to push the album’s release date back a week due to an online leak that occurred a few weeks before the release date.
A$AP Rocky collaborated with MIA, Future, Mark Ronson and Kanye West, and also collaborated with legendary rock singer Rod Stewart on the song Every Day. At. Long. Overdue, A$AP Rocky successfully reached the number one position on the Billboard 200 chart despite poor reviews.
The album was his second consecutive successful record, selling 116,000 copies in the United States and 11,000 in Canada.
In 2016, A$AP Rocky collaborated with fashion brand Guess to re-launch the ’90s GUE$$ clothing line he wore as a child. Later that year, he co-wrote the song “Blended Family (What You Do for Love)” written by Alicia Keys for her album Here.
