Meet Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner Family Member
Ahmad “Sause” Gardner was born in Detroit, Michigan, where his parents lived. However, his mother raised him and his two older siblings as a single parent. So all the effort he put into building his athletic career was to help his mother retire. In March 2022, the American Athletic Conference posted a photo of Ahmad talking about his mother’s retirement.
“She would always say, ‘No, I’m going to work.’ It was great to be able to say, ‘No, I don’t have to work anymore.’ It was just a blessing because I always told her growing up, ‘You don’t have to work anymore.’
Ahmad was the No. 4 pick by the Jets and No. 5 pick by the Giants in the 2022 NFL Draft.
“I felt like I was the chosen one,” he said after an NFL charity event about overcoming adversity as a kid in Detroit and a player in Cincinnati. “I felt like I was the best in the draft. There was no doubt about it. There was no way I could be a failure. That shouldn’t even be an option.”
He plays as a full-back and exceeds the basic requirements for athletic ability.
The Detroit, Michigan native plays with infectious enthusiasm and is always extremely aware of his surroundings. He has the ability to change initiatives on the fly and position himself advantageously for 2v1 opportunities. The Cincinnati CB reads and reacts to passes extremely quickly. His game-winning catch against ECU in 2019 is just one example of his natural instincts in action.

Meet Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner Mom, Alisa Gardner
Alisa Gardner was born in December 1974, making her 47. When Ahmad was a child, he asked his mother at the beginning of the year to buy him a Playstation for Christmas a few months later. She winced, knowing how tight money was. “But then when Christmas came, you’d see it right there in that big box,” Gardner says. “She always made the impossible possible.”
Alisa worked multiple jobs on the auto assembly line — hard work that recently injured her shoulder.
And it was Alisa who witnessed her son’s ability on the field firsthand. She remembers how steadfast he was in his career ambitions. When asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, “his answer never changed,” Alisa said in an interview. He wanted to be a soccer player.
Cincinnati’s coaches showed their concern every step of the way, even visiting Gardner’s mother at work.
In December 2020, Ahmad’s mother shared how emotional she had been lately. Her three children were grown, and she said she had “cried a lot this year.” Throughout Ahmad’s childhood, she sometimes worked the night shift—from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.—in the assembly department at a car seat factory. As a single mother, she worked hard, getting her children to school despite having very little sleep. Ahmad’s brother Allante calls her “Superwoman.”
As the family prepared to travel to Texas for the game, she was saddened by the thought of how her son had gotten to this point. She could see from a young age that he had talent, and now he was one of the best players in the country, with a promising NFL future and a chance to compete for a national championship.
Alisa realized the impossibility of it all. But she also remembered her confident son and his dream, which kept appearing before their eyes.
“He knows exactly what he wants,” she said.
In August 2016, Ahmad posted on his Twitter: “I will continue to work and strive until my mother no longer works.”
Alisa knows her son is known to the world as “Sauce” and even showed up for the 2022 NFL Draft with a diamond necklace. But Alisa calls her youngest child by his first name. She shares that he is the quietest of her three children.
Allante also added that his brother was “more of a silent killer.”

They took into account the school’s academic programs as well as the relationships formed with each member of the staff.
