Alex Barnes met the love of his life, Whitney Cummings, at work.
In early 2020, Whitney’s foster dog attacked one of her other dogs, so she rushed to the vet (Alex’s clinic) but the staff stopped her from entering the clinic because she looked like “Courtney Love having a breakdown” and it was right at the start of the COVID pandemic.
“I was crying, I was screaming, I was blocking the door. And they wouldn’t let me in,” the comedian recalled.
Luckily, Alex recognized her and came to her rescue. And the rest is history!
Before Alex, Whitney dated Miles Skinner, executive creative director of special projects at VICE, who has worked with a number of prestigious brands including Nike, Adidas, and Rolls Royce.
The two even got engaged in September 2018. The comedian later shared that the key to their successful relationship is that they keep their personal and professional lives completely separate. “I don’t let him watch my stand-up comedy. Some things are better kept secret. I don’t watch his porn, he doesn’t watch my stand-up comedy. It’s a very good balance,” she explained.

Previously, Alex completed his Emergency and Critical Care internship at WVRC in Waukesha, Wisconsin and his ECC residency at ACCESS Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Culver City.

Surprisingly, while others dreamed of becoming firefighters, doctors or musicians, Alex was interested in veterinary medicine from a young age, all thanks to his father, a small animal veterinarian. So, spending a lot of time at his father’s veterinary hospital, Alex eventually developed a fondness for the process and thought about pursuing a career in veterinary medicine when he grew up.
But how did Alex get into critical care? Well, early in his third year of veterinary school, he met one of the “critical care specialists” who showed him all the aspects of critical care, and “it seemed to fit a lot of aspects of Alex’s personality.” So he decided to make a career in that field.
For him, a good reviewer needs to be able to think quickly and be able to multitask. Additionally, they need to have a good knowledge base and be someone who can perform tasks on the floor – whether it’s placing tubes or other procedures in the ER.
When he’s not in intensive care, Alex spends most of his time climbing. He has climbed on multiple continents and works as a professional route setter for indoor climbing gyms across the country.
