Early life and education
Alexi McCammond grew up in Rockford, Illinois, United States. She was born in 1994 on March 27.
She attended Guilford High School in Rockford, Illinois. In 2011, she was awarded a full four-year QuestBridge scholarship and spent that time studying at the University of Chicago.
Alexi McCammond is of mixed descent, with her father being black and her mother being white. Her mother is only identified as Shelli McCammond, while her father’s identity has not been confirmed. She has two siblings: Braxton McCammond and Aubyn McCammond.

Alexi McCammond began her writing career as a freelance political journalist for women’s magazine Cosmopolitan before leaving to become a news editor for online women’s news site Bustle. In 2017, she began working for Axios.

In November 2019, Alexi McCammond was reportedly threatened by former NBA player and TNT analyst Charles Barkley at an Atlanta club ahead of the 2020 Democratic primary debate in Atlanta, Georgia.
“I don’t hit women, but if I did, I would hit you,” Charles Barkley reportedly remarked when Alexi McCammond said one of his comments seemed contradictory. Charles Barkley has since formally apologized.
