She has two brothers. Maki is a fourth generation Japanese American, or Yonsei. Her grandmother was interned in a Japanese internment camp at Heart Mountain Relocation Center, Wyoming, during World War II.
Her grandfather was a member of the 442nd Infantry Regiment, a unit primarily composed of Japanese-American soldiers.
One of her great-grandfathers was a sharecropper in Mountain View, California. At age 14, Maki was scouted by a talent agent in Seattle, leading her to move to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. She didn’t go to college; instead, she focused on her acting and musical endeavors.

Maki’s career began at the age of 14 when she moved to Los Angeles after being scouted by a talent agent.
Columbia Records recruited her to form the girl band The Valli Girls, where she played keytar. As part of her training, she took DJ lessons at Freakbeat Records.
She acted in the television series iCarly: iGo to Japan (2008) and appeared in many movies and television series such as Step Up 3D (2010) and The Big Bang Theory (2010).
She also had supporting roles in the comedy films The Family Tree (2011) and Geography Club (2013).
