Country singer Vince Gill was there for his wife, Amy Grant, during the most difficult time of their marriage.
In 2020, Grant began experiencing a series of health problems including open heart surgery, traumatic brain injury, and throat surgery.
“It was just one thing after another,” Gill said. Everybody about their situation in a new interview.
Grant’s first health crisis was a complete shock to the couple. Gill was the first person to participate in the trial. Although his results were fine, it was Grant – who has a family history of heart disease – that was of concern.
Tests quickly revealed she was suffering from PAPVR (abnormal partial pulmonary venous return), a rare birth defect that affects blood flow to the heart. Grant underwent surgery to treat the condition during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving Gill unable to visit for a time. When possible, he recalls that sweet moment.
“She wasn’t anesthetized yet, and I saw her and it was the most beautiful, peaceful thing on her face,” he said.
Gill then devoted his time to helping his wife recover. However, in July 2022, Grant was out riding his bike when he hit a pothole and fell very hard. She remained unconscious despite wearing a helmet, suffering cuts, bruises and a debilitating brain injury that required hospitalization.
As a result, Grant was forced to postpone his performance.
“It was really sad. Everything was canceled and I just said, ‘What if I never get back?'” she said.
She shared that her husband has been very supportive: “He said, ‘Things happen to people every day and you just have to take it one day at a time, we’re here and I love you.’ And that makes every day of the journey okay.”
However, Grant had more health problems. The following year, she had surgery to remove a tumor in her throat and had to relearn how to sing. She also had to undergo surgery that same year.
Although time has healed many of her wounds, Grant still suffers from amnesia and cannot recall the peaceful days of her marriage to Gill.
“My details around it are a little fuzzy,” she said.
Still, she and Gill are as devoted to each other as ever: “We’ll be fine,” Gill said.
“Yeah, we will. We’ll be fine,” Grant added.
