Despite the hardships and food shortages brought about by Cuba’s Special Period, Ana de Armas recalls a happy childhood. As a child and teen, she had no access to the internet and little exposure to popular culture outside of Cuba. Her family had neither a VCR nor a DVD player, so she had to rely on her neighbors to watch Hollywood movies.
Ana practiced monologues in front of a mirror to hone her craft, and officially declared acting as her career choice at age 12. At 14, she began auditioning for the Cuban National Theater in Havana, often hitchhiking to attend rigorous training sessions.
