Early life and education
Anne Marie was born on April 7, 1991 and grew up in East Tilbury, Essex, England. Her father, Wayne Nicholson She is a builder and handyman from East London, while her mother, Sue Nicholson, is a teacher from Essex.
She has an older sister, Samantha Nicholson. Anne-Marie starred in two West End productions as a child – in Les Misérables at the age of six and in Howling in the Wind with Jessie J at the age of 12.
Anne-Marie is a black belt in Shotokan Karate and has been studying Karate since she was 9. She won double gold at the 2002 Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association World Championships, gold and silver at the 2007 Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association World Championships, and gold at the British Traditional Karate Federation National Championships.
Anne-Marie believes it taught her “discipline and focus – basically everything I need for this career”, but now she doesn’t have the time to practice regularly due to performing commitments.
As a teenager she attended Palmer College in Thurrock. Anne-Marie admits she was a nightmare at school and felt sorry for the teachers because she made their lives hell.

In 2013, Anne-Marie recorded a solo song titled “Summer Girl” for Rocket Records. Her solo career was put on hold as she focused on her artistic development; during this time, she appeared as a guest on songs by Magnetic Man, Gorgon City, and Raized by Wolves.
Rudimental became interested in her and when one of the lead singers quit, they invited Anne-Marie to fill in. She sang on four songs on their album We the Generation, two of which were with Dizzee Rascal and Will Heard. The latter’s song “Rumour Mill” reached number 67 in the UK Singles Chart. They invited her to tour for two years.
Two tracks from Anne-Marie’s EP “Karate”, “Karate” and “Gemini”, were released on June 10, 2015 under the Major Tom Records label. This was Anne-Marie’s first solo live performance.
In November of the same year, Anne-Marie released “Do It Right”, which peaked at number 90 on the UK Singles Chart. Breathing Fire was the working title for the Anne-first Anne-Marie full-length album, which was originally intended to include it.
