AQ Biography

Gilbert Bani popularly known by his stage name AQ, 38, is a popular Nigerian rapper and songwriter, born on 1st August 1986. The Abia State native music artist AQ became the talk of the town after his single “Agu Ji Ndi Men” was nominated at the Headies Awards for Best Rap Single of 2016.

Background & Education

AQ, born the youngest of six children, grew up in Surulere. He attended Kings College in Lagos and also studied at the University of Lagos.

Music career

AQ started by listening to popular songs and cramming the lyrics, he could sing most of the lyrics from start to finish without making any mistakes. Thanks to that, he started writing his own lyrics and learning how to compose them, such as AQ’s music project.

In 2001, AQ got his first recording contract with Big Leaf Records, he stayed with Big Leaf Records for two full years before deciding to move on and start his own company in 2003.

While working alone, he released the widely accepted single “(W)rap Nigeria” produced by creative producer Kraftmatics. The album was released in 2004 with a music video.

AQ also released the EP project “Listen and Understand” in 2005 with the hit single “Things That We Do” which immediately received an international online distribution deal.

As if that wasn’t enough, in 2006, AQ released a mixtape called “Maga Must Pay Vol 1“.

In the long run, AQ called it a hiatus in music due to the pressure of completing his tertiary education, he went on to study at the prestigious University of Lagos (UNILAG) but while still in school, he took time to release the single “Make Money” featuring Morachi and Xtrim produced by LayLow, followed by an online Mixtape video “Love and Money”

In 2012, the year AQ graduated from Unilag, he launched his own record label “Hustle Inc”. Under Hustle Inc, he released the EP “Make Your Best Rapper Look Stupid” but before that in 2010, he released the EP “The Past, Present, and Future”.

In 2018, he released the EP “Crown” featuring Loose Kaynon, a rapper from Chocolate City.

In 2019, AQ won the Lyricist On The Roll award with the project “Crown“
