Madonna fans are defending the Queen of Pop and criticizing Azealia Banks after the rapper made controversial comments about the singer.
It all started on September 25 when Katy Perry appeared on the Australian talk show, Projectto promote her new album 143During the interview, Perry credited Madonna for her impact on music, especially on women in the music industry.
“She’s the greatest. She paved the way. People, when you talk about me reaching out to younger artists, every woman still needs to continue to say ‘thank you’ to her because she’s breaking barriers. I’m 40 years old, I’m still making music because of Madonna,” Perry said.
Banks saw Perry’s comment and reshared the video, offering her thoughts.
“Grace Jones, Lil Kim, Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Teena Marie, Celine Dion, Bjork, Missy Elliott, Toni Braxton, Spice (JA), Eve and especially Janet Jackson – don’t owe Madonna anything,” Banks responded.

Banks’ comments sparked a backlash from Madonna fans, who not only cited several examples of Madonna’s influence but also outright criticized her for disrespecting Madonna.
“‘It’s important to me to follow in Madonna’s footsteps.’-Beyoncé, 2013,” one user wrote.

“Come on,” another quipped.

This isn’t the first time Banks’ comments have sparked controversy. Earlier this year, Banks got into a tiff with rapper Doechii. Doechii asked her fans what their names should be. That’s when Banks chimed in and offered her two cents.
“They should definitely be called ‘wannabes,’” she said over Billboard.
Doechii also responded with a round of applause.
“@azealiabanksforever the first time you came to me I ignored you out of respect for my elders. It’s not my fault you sell b–sy soap and I sell platinum records. Please leave me alone,” she replied.
Madonna’s legacy is recognized as the best-selling female artist of all time. The Guinness Book of World Records notes that she has sold more than 400 million records worldwide.
Throughout her career, she has achieved 12 number 1 hits on the charts. Billboard Hot 100 chart and a total of 38 top 10 hits, a record for female artists until Taylor Swift surpassed her.
