The ambush killed seven soldiers and two civilians while the governor was unhurt. His scheduled meeting was rescheduled.

Early life
Zulum was born on 25 August 1969 in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State. Zulum obtained a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Maiduguri after attending Mafa Primary School from 1975 to 1980 and Monguno Public Secondary School from 1980 to 1985.
He then joined the Youth Union of Katsina Polytechnic.
Zulum was born on 25 August 1969 in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State. In 2005, he began his PhD in Soil and Water Engineering at the University of Maiduguri, completing it in 2009.
Career
Babagana started his career in the Borno Civil Service as a Technical Assistant in the Ministry of Agriculture in 1989.
Babagana joined the Borno United Local Government Authority in 1990 as a Senior Field Supervisor, later promoted to Principal Water Supply and Sewerage Engineer.
He started his career as an assistant lecturer at the University of Maiduguri in 2000 and became a Professor. In 2010 and 2011, Babagana served as Deputy Dean and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
Babagana Umara was appointed as the Rector of the Polytechnic in 2011. During that time, he continued to teach at the University of Maiduguri.
Governor Kashim Shetima of Borno State appointed him as Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement in 2015, a position he held until 2018.
On 1 October 2018, he won the All Progressives Party primary in Borno State. With 1,175,440 votes, he was elected Governor of Borno State in the 2019 Borno governorship election held on 9 March 2019.
