Early life
In Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State, Zulum was born on 25 August 1969. Zulum holds a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Maiduguri after attending Mafa Primary School from 1975 to 1980 and Secondary School Government, Monguno from 1980 to 1985.
He then joined the Katsina State Polytechnic Youth Union.

Career

He began his career as a teaching assistant at the University of Maiduguri in 2000 and rose to the rank of Professor. In 2010 and 2011, Babagana served as Deputy Dean and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
Babagana Umara was appointed Principal of the Polytechnic in 2011. Meanwhile, he continued to teach at the University of Maiduguri.
