Basetsana Julia “Bassie” Kumalo (born 29 March 1974), better known by her stage name Basetsana Kumalo, is a South African television presenter, humanitarian and beauty pageant winner.

At the age of 16, she won Miss Soweto and Miss Black South Africa, launching her career.

She was also crowned Miss South Africa in 1994 and placed first runner-up at Miss World the following year.

Early Life & Education

Basetsana Kumalo was born in the South African town of Soweto. Her bus driver father, Philip Makgalemele, died in 2003, and her teacher mother, Beatrice Makgalemele, died in 2006.

Her old school is Thabisang Primary School. When Soweto schools became unsafe in 1986, Basetsana Kumalo was transferred to Trinity High School in Lenasia.

Basetsana Kumalo’s two sisters and brother spent their early years making sandwiches to sell at weekend soccer games to help the family survive. Her sister’s name is Johanna Mukoki.

Before and during her time as Miss South Africa, Basetsana Kumalo dated boxer Dingaan Thobela. She met her husband Romeo Kumalo, a Vodacom executive and former presenter, when she was elected Miss Soweto.

They started dating in 1997 and married in 2000. Nkosinathi Gabriel Kumalo, Basetsana Kumalo’s first child, was born in 2005. Her second son, uShaka Kgositsile Emmanuel Kumalo, was born in 2012. She also has one child The third child (daughter) is named Bontle ba Morena Jasmine Kumalo.

Basetsana Kumalo is a South African television personality, beauty pageant titleholder, businesswoman and philanthropist.

She was crowned Miss South Africa 1990/1991 and represented her country at the Miss Universe pageant later that year at the age of 16.

The South African Women’s Business Association is led by Basetsana Kumalo, who is also the President of the Association. Through a transaction with investment company Pro Direct 189, in 2008 she became a new shareholder of Tawana.
