Beyoncé has successfully secured trademark rights to her daughter’s name Blue Ivy after a decades-long legal dispute.
The recent court ruling in favor of the music icon marks the end of a legal battle with a Wisconsin store that had previously held the trademark for the phrase “Blue Ivy” since September 2009 , according to The Trademark Official Gazette.
In 2012, the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer initiated a legal dispute with a government agency after giving birth to her first child.
The application filed by her company, BGK Trademark Holdings LLC, with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, was met with opposition from Veronica Morales, a professional wedding planner, leading to a controversial legal battle.
Official records reveal that Morales operated under the name Blue Ivy Events for three years before the celebrity legal cases.
Reports indicate that in 2020, a formal review took place in which the USPTO dismissed the businessman’s complaints, citing insufficient similarities between the event planning work and the child’s name Beyoncé’s daughter.
Following her victory in the 2020 legal battle, Beyoncé’s legal team decided not to move forward with the paperwork for “Blue Ivy”, leading to it being abandoned.
However, in November 2023, the singer filed for a trademark only to face setbacks when a store in Wisconsin was found to be in possession of the Blue Ivy logo.
In a recent review, the store’s logo, which has been in possession since 2011, was said by the examiner to bear a resemblance to a celebrity’s daughter’s name.
Choosing not to object to the request, the outlet’s silence paved the way for Beyoncé to proceed with trademark registration, a move that was officially announced in The Trademark Official Gazette on December 31.
According to the document, “Within 30 days from the date of publication, any party who believes that the mark would be harmed by the registration of the mark may file a notice of opposition (or extension of time) with the Society. Trademark Trial and Appeal.”
If there are no objections by January 30, the “Single Ladies” singer’s legal team will receive a Notice of Allowance.
Although she and Jay-Z also share seven-year-old twins named Rumi and Sir, there are currently two trademark applications underway for their names.
