Profession
In 1971, Billy Joel re-emerged as an artist musician, recording a poorly performing album, Cold Spring Harbor, for Family Productions, which brought him a dodgy long-term contract. Seeking refuge in Los Angeles, he performed under the pseudonym “Neighborhood Piano Bar”.
Meanwhile, a live recording of Billy Joel’s song “Chief Jack” caught the attention of Columbia Records executives, who released him from his contract. His first album for Columbia, Piano Man (1973), included a hit single of the same name; the song became his own due to his unique take on piano bars.
The album included four US hit singles (including “Simply the Way You Are” which won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year) and sold 5,000,000 copies, surpassing Simon and Art Garfunkel’s “Bridge over Troubled Water” to become Columbia Records’ most popular singles collection to date.
Billy Joel’s string of hits and award-winning platinum albums included 52nd Street (1979), which won a Grammy for Album of the Year; Glass House (1980); and Nylon Curtains (1982). On his final album, Joel’s lyrics continued to focus on emotion and slice-of-life, with his first socially relevant songs, “Allentown” and “Goodnight Saigon,” about an unemployed steelworker and a Vietnam War veteran, respectively.
In the mid-1980s, Joel was one of the first rock singers to record a musical album. He married supermodel Christie Brinkley (the second of his four relationships). From The Innocent Man (1983), known for its doo-wop and chorus effects, to Stormfront (1989) and River of Dreams (1993), Billy Joel continued to produce popular albums.
“Dream and Delusions”, featuring Billy Joel’s classical musical style, was released in 2001. “Movin’ Out”, a music-focused dance track based on more than twenty of Joel’s songs, written, arranged and coordinated by Twyla Tharp, debuted in 2002. In 2006, after receiving treatment for alcoholism, Joel launched the performance series “12 Gardens Live”.
Billy Joel has received many honors. In 1999, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2013, he was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors, and the following year, he received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress.
