Her mother, Audrey Duhinio Janairo, is a computer executive and her father, Alexander Janairo, is a banker.

On November 30, 2002, she married a second time to photojournalist Simon Wakelin. On September 25, 2005, their daughter Bianca Wakelin was born.
On April 2, 2010, Tia Carrere filed for divorce in person in Los Angeles County Superior Court. According to court documents, she filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences and requested sole custody of her daughter, Bianca Wakelin.
The two divorced in August 2010 and reportedly share joint custody of Bianca Wakelin. She currently resides in Los Angeles.
