Early Life & Education

William Shakespeare was born into the family of John Shakespeare and Mary Shakespeare. His father, John Shakespeare, was a butcher and glove maker. His mother, Mary Aden, was the daughter of a wealthy landowner family. John Shakespeare was originally from Snitterfield in Warwickshire, England.

William Shakespeare was an Englishman. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and baptized on 26 April 1564. Although the date of his birth is unknown, it is traditionally considered to be 23 April, St George’s Day.

William Shakespeare was the third of eight children of John Shakespeare and Mary Aden. He is the family’s eldest living son. His siblings were Joan Shakespeare, Edmund Shakespeare, Margaret Shakespeare, Gilbert Shakespeare, Anne Shakespeare and Richard Shakespeare.

Career

When William Shakespeare was 18 years old, he married Anne Hathaway. Anne Hathaway was 26 years old when they became a couple. The Diocese of Worcester granted the couple a marriage license on November 27, 1582. Six months after the marriage, Anne Hathaway gave birth to her first daughter, Susanna Hall. Susanna Hall was baptized on May 26, 1583.

Nearly two years after Susanna Hall was born, Anne Hathaway gave birth to twins, a son named Hamnet Shakespeare and a daughter named Judith Shakespeare. The children were baptized on 2 February 1585. Hamnet Shakespeare died at the age of 11, with the cause of his death unknown. He was buried on August 11, 1596.

Throughout his life, William Shakespeare divided his time between London and Stratford. He died on April 23, 1616 at the age of 52. William Shakespeare’s cause of death is unknown, and he died within a month of signing his will. His wife, Anne Hathaway, and two daughters, Susanna Hall and Judith Shakespeare, survive him.
