Chadalavada Umesh Chandra (born 29 March 1966), commonly known as Umesh Chandra, is undoubtedly the most famous police officer in the history of Andhra Pradesh.

Early life and education

Chadalavada Umesh Chandra was born on 29 March 1966. He was born and raised in Pedapudi, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh.

His siblings names are Chadalavada Satish Chandra and Ravi Kavita.

He was born to Chadalavada Venugopala Rao and Nayanatara. In Begumpet, he attended Hyderabad Public School. In 1987, he graduated from Nizam’s College.

Chadalavada Umesh Chandra was recruited into the Indian Police Force in 1991 and trained at the National Police Academy in Hyderabad.

He worked as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Warangal from October 1992 to October 1994. He was the driving force behind the successful “Jana Jaagruti” public awareness campaign. He was then transferred to Pulivendula, where he worked from November 1, 1994 to February 2, 1995.

Later, Chadalavada Umesh Chandra was appointed as the Officer-in-Charge of Special Duty in Warangal. He maintained his grip on the district, arrested criminals, assisted the common man, raised the morale of the police force and portrayed the humane side of the police force.

Cause of death

Chadalavada Umesh Chandra was killed in his car while he was stopped at a traffic light on 4 September 1999. Four Naxalites opened fire on him and his driver. Both Chadalavada Umesh Chandra and the driver were shot at close range and died on the spot.

He was not carrying a weapon that day. When he was chasing some Naxalites, they noticed that he was unarmed so they turned around and shot him twice. They shot him in the head after he collapsed on the road.

The Chadalavada Umesh Chandra statue was inaugurated on 4 September 2000 at Sanjiva Reddy Nagar intersection in Hyderabad.
