Early life and education
Hervé Leclerc, 66, was born in Nice, France on June 18, 1957. He grew up in a family of motorsports enthusiasts, his father Jean was a rally driver, and his uncle Lucien was a Formula 1 driver. Hervé developed a keen interest in racing from an early age and began to participate in karting at the age of 10.
He won several regional and national championships in karting and switched to single-seater racing in 1977. He joined the French Formula Renault Championship and finished third in his first season.

Herve Leclerc continued to race in Formula 3 until 1982, when he moved to Formula 2. He drove for the Maurer team and scored one point in his first season.
He then moved to the AGS team in 1983 and improved his results, finishing seventh in the championship and taking two podium finishes.
In the same year, he also participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time for the Welter Racing team, driving the Rondeau M382, but retired due to engine failure.
In 1984 he returned to Le Mans for the Joest Racing team in a Porsche 956. Together with Klaus Ludwig and Henri Pescarolo he finished sixth overall and second in the C1 class.
In 1985, Leclerc joined the Lola team in Formula 3, the successor to Formula 2. He had a difficult season, scoring only two points and finishing 18th. He competed at Le Mans again, driving a WM P85 for the Welter Racing team.
