Chris Martin has set an end date for Coldplay.
The band’s frontman shared the exact moment he thinks the band will retire even though they have a new album coming out.
Martin appeared on Apple Music 1 with host Zane Lowe to talk about the end of the band and share why it’s important to have limits.
“We’re only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s the truth. Yes, I promise,” he said, according to subway.
Martin added: “Because less is more and for some of our critics, even less is more! It’s really important that we have that limit.”
Coldplay are currently preparing to release their new album, Moon Musicon October 4. This will be their tenth release.
“There are only seven Harry Potter. There are only 12.5 Beatles albums, Bob Marley has the same album, so do all our heroes,” Martin elaborated.
“Also, having that limit means that the quality control is so high now and for a song to make it it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so, we I’m trying to improve as much as I can, we’re trying to improve.”
While the band may not be completely together after their 12th album, Martin has teased that there could be some “side stuff” with his bandmates Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion . However, he noted that it will be different from Coldplay.
This isn’t the first time Martin has teased the end of the rock band. He has been teasing the end of the band since 2021. That year, Martin spoke with BBC Radio 2 and shared that they have no plans to produce music after 2025.
“I know I can tell you: Our last proper record will come out in 2025 and then I think we’ll just tour. Maybe we’ll do some collaborations but The Coldplay catalog is done,” he said through I news.
Coldplay formed in 1996 but did not enter the mainstream charts until several years later. Since then, they have sold millions of albums and are currently on the Music of the Spheres Tour. CBS reported that the trip made more than $1 billion.
