Cyndi Lauper Reflects on Madonna Feud: ‘It’s Like Apples and Oranges’

In the 1980s, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna were considered rivals when they rose to fame. Lauper is reflecting on this feud, sharing how she was told it existed in the first place.

Thinking back on their apparent feud now, Cyndi, 70, finds the tiff “sad”, admitting that she doesn’t think the Material Girl singer, 65, ‘likes’ her much.

She even adjusted her style at the time to avoid comparisons: “It’s so sad, there can only be room for one person? I don’t like it.”

Cyndi revealed to E! News that she never directly addressed their supposed rivalry with Madonna because she doesn’t believe it would change anything: “No, I don’t think she likes me to So.”

Even her fashion choices were influenced by this competition, as she explained how she changed her hairstyle in the mid-1980s to differentiate herself from Madonna’s blonde locks.

Despite their differences, Cyndi expressed regret that they could not be friends, telling the New York Times, “It’s a shame. I wish I had a friend.” She likens their competition to “apples and oranges”, suggesting that people are forced to ‘choose’ between them.

Cyndi has previously criticized Madonna, especially in 2017 when she disagreed with Madonna’s profanity-filled speech at the Women’s March. While appreciating Madonna’s presence at the event, Cyndi felt the message did not align with their larger vision.

Now, Cyndi is preparing for a farewell tour across North America with the goal of retiring on a high note.

She emphasized the physical demands of singing: “When you’re a singer, you have to be an athlete. You can’t just walk around. When you’re 20, yes. But what about when you get older?” ? Are not .”

Her rigorous preparation includes yoga, weight training, healthy eating, physical therapy and vocal coaching four days a week.

The tour kicked off on October 18 in Montreal, Canada, with further shows scheduled in Toronto, Boston, Detroit and Washington, DC. On October 30, Lauper will take the stage in her hometown of New York at the iconic Madison Square Garden.

The tour will then travel to Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville, Seattle, Los Angeles and other cities across North America. The 23-city tour will end in Chicago on December 5.

The buzz surrounding the superstar has also sparked a new achievement on the Billboard charts – one that she has never experienced before.

Lauper’s latest album, Let the Canaries Singquietly debuted at No. 7 on this week’s Soundtracks chart, marking her first appearance on the chart.

She last reached the top 10 of the US albums chart in 2016 with her country album Detour, which debuted and peaked at number 4 on the Top Country Albums chart.
