He also experimented with producing electronic music and writing songs. He attended the South Iceland Multicultural School, where he met some of his future band members.
He graduated from Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands (Southern Regional College) in 2012 and moved to Berlin, Germany, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Music Management and Audio Production in 2017.
Personal life
Daði Freyr’s husband Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir is a dancer and performer who has been part of his music project Gagnamagnið since 2017.
The two met while studying in Berlin in 2014. They have two daughters, Áróra Björg (born 2019) and Kría Sif (born 2021).
Daði once said that his daughters inspired him to write some songs, such as “Thinking about things and “Ten Years”. Daði and his family live in Berlin but visit Iceland frequently and maintain close ties with his homeland.
Profession
Daði Freyr started his music career in 2012 when he founded the band RetRoBot together with his friend Kristján Pálmi. They were joined by singer Gunnlaugur Bjarnason and guitarist Guðmundur Einar Vilbergsson, whom Daði knew at school.
The band won the Músíktilraunir (Musical Experiment) competition that year, with Daði being named the best electronic musician of the year. The band released one album, Blackout, in 2013, before disbanding.
In 2017, Daði participated in the Icelandic national selection for the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest, Söngvakeppnin, singing the song “Is this love?” (Icelandic: Hvað með það?).
He is supported on stage by a band consisting of his sister Sigrún Birna Pétursdóttir (backing vocals), his wife Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir (dancer), and friends Hulda Kristín Kolbrúnardóttir (backing vocals), Stefán Hannesson (dancer) and Jóhann Sigurður Jóhannsson (dancer).
The group was called Gagnamagnið, which means “Data” or “Data Plan” Icelandic. They wore their signature teal sweaters with pixel art portraits of themselves printed on them. They came in second in the final, losing to Svala Björgvinsdóttir.
In 2020, Daði and Gagnamagnið returned to Söngvakeppnin, this time with the powerful song “Think About Things”, which Daði wrote for his daughter Áróra. They won the competition by a landslide and will represent Iceland at the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest.
However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event was cancelled. Despite this, Daði and Gagnamagnið still gained international fame and won alternative competitions in several countries including Austria, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
The song also went viral on social media platforms such as TikTok and YouTube, and was praised by celebrities such as Russell Crowe, Jennifer Garner and Will Ferrell. The song reached the top 10 on multiple European charts and the top 40 in the UK.
In 2021, Daði and Gagnamagnið were confirmed as Iceland’s representatives for the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest, with the song “10 years”, which Dadi wrote for his wife Arni.
They gave a memorable performance of the song during the competition, showcasing their signature sweaters, dance moves and instruments.
Unfortunately, due to a member testing positive for COVID-19, a pre-recorded performance from the second rehearsal was played during their semi-final and final rounds.
Despite the challenges, their talent shone through, ultimately finishing an impressive fourth with 378 points.
In addition to participating in the Eurovision Song Contest, Daði Freyr has pursued a solo career, releasing several albums and singles under his own name or under Mixophrygian.
Some of his famous works include the album Where do we want to go (2017), I made an album (2023)and singles Every Moment With You Is Christmas (2020), Feel the Love (2021), and “Now There’s Someone Else” (2021).
He has also collaborated with artists such as Ásgeir, Jónsi and Ultraflex. He has performed at festivals and venues such as Iceland Airwaves, Eurosonic and Berlin Festival. He also created his own app, Neon Planets, which allows users to create music and visuals.
