Early life and education
Daniel Castelo Podence was born on October 21, 1995 in Oeiras, Portugal. He was born to his parents, Maria do Céu Castelo and Quintino Podence, but it is unclear if he grew up with any siblings, as their names are not made public.
Podence’s educational background is not publicly known. However, it is known that he started his football journey at CF Belenenses before joining Sporting CP’s youth academy in 2005, where he developed until 2014.
Ethnically, Podence is of Portuguese descent, but his religion is not known.
Career
Daniel Podence was born in Oeiras, Lisbon, Portugal. He joined Sporting CP’s youth system just before his 10th birthday, having previously played for neighboring club Belenenses. As a youth player, Podence made his debut for Sporting’s reserve team in 2013, coming on as a late substitute in a Segunda Liga match.
Podence officially appeared for Sporting’s first team in 2014, starting a Taça da Liga match against Vitória de Guimarães. He was then loaned to Moreirense for the 2016-17 season. He made his Primeira Liga debut that September and scored his first goal in the Portuguese top flight in October.
In January 2017, sports coach Jorge Jesus called Podence on loan. However, a year later, in June 2018, Podence terminated his contract with Sporting following a violent attack on the players by their own supporters. He then joined Greek club Olympiacos on a five-year contract.
Podence had a successful first season with Olympiacos, scoring 8 goals in all competitions. The club finished second in the Greek Super League. In January 2020, he moved to English club Wolverhampton Wanderers for a transfer fee of £16.9 million, making his Premier League debut as a substitute against Manchester United.
Podence became a regular starter for Wolves, with his first Premier League start coming in a 3-0 win over Everton in July 2020. He scored his first league goal for the club at the end next week against Crystal Palace. In September 2023, Podence returned to Olympiacos on a season-long loan.
Most recently, in September 2024, Podence joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab, continuing his professional career abroad after spells in Portugal, Greece and England. He has shown his skill and versatility throughout his career as an attacking midfielder.
Daniel Podence made an impressive start to his international career with the Portugal U21 team in 2016. He scored in his first two appearances for the Portugal U21 team, scoring against Hungary (3– 3) and Liechtenstein (7–1) in the 2017 UEFA Euro qualifying round.
Podence was then selected for the Under-21 European Championship finals in Poland, where he repeated the feat by scoring in a 4–2 group stage win over North Macedonia.
Podence’s strong performances at international youth level soon earned him a call-up to the Portuguese national team. In September 2019, he was called up to the Portugal squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against Serbia and Lithuania.
Podence made his senior international debut 13 months later, coming on as a substitute and playing the final 15 minutes of a 3–0 home win over Sweden in the UEFA Nations League.
