Early life
Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs was born to Melvin Earl Combs and Janice Combs on November 4, 1969, in Harlem, New York City. He has an older sister named Keisha Combs.
The Combs family named their son Sean John Combs. His father was an army officer and served in the United States Air Force. His mother, Janice, was a teacher’s aide and model. He spent his formative years in Mount Vernon, New York City.
When Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs was just two years old, his father was shot and killed while sitting in his car. Melvin Earl Combs was 33 years old at the time. He was nicknamed “Puff” because as a child he would “huff and puff” when he was angry.
Education
Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs is an alumnus of Mount Saint Michael Academy. He graduated from the school in 1987. While a student, he played on the school’s football team.
After graduating from high school, he was accepted to study Business at Howard University. But he dropped out after two years.
Career
Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs began his music career with an internship at the New York office of Uptown Records in 1990. He later secured a full-time position with the label and became its Talent Director. During his time as Talent Director, he was responsible for developing the careers of Mary J. Blige and Jodeci. He was fired from Uptown Records in 1993.
Instead of joining another record label, he decided to start his own record label and called it Bad Boy Entertainment. The label was a joint venture with Aristo Records and soon signed his first artist, The Notorious BIG. As the label grew, he signed more musical artists such as Carl Thomas, Faith Evans, Total, 112, and Father MC. He also had a top-notch in-house production team called The Hitmen.
In June 1997, Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs released his debut single, Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down, under the stage name Puff Daddy. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for 28 weeks. He made a statement as a rapper when he released his debut album, No Way Out in 1997. The project sold 561,000 copies in its first week, and was certified seven times platinum by the RIAA. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 1998 and received four other nominations.
His second album Forever was released on August 24, 1999. The album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart. His third and fourth studio albums were The Saga Continues…, (2001) and Press Play (2006), respectively. He formed a band, Dirty Money, in 2009. Dirty Money released their debut album, Last Train To Paris, in 2010.
Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs has won three Grammy Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards. He is credited as the producer of the MTV show, Making The Band. He founded his clothing line, Sean John, in 1999. He won the 2004 Men’s Designer of the Year Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Kimberly Porter is the mother of his son, King Combs (born 1998), and twin daughters D’Lila Star Combs and Jessie James Combs (born 2006).
