His mother, Joanne (Nelson), was a teacher, and his father was a Lutheran pastor, professor of history and political science, and director of higher education for the Lutheran Church in America (now part of the ELCA).

Solberg has a brother named Pastor Solberg. The family lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Solberg attended Augustana College for two years. The family later moved to Mexico City, where Solberg studied for a year at the University of the Americas.
