His final totals during his tenure at Virginia Tech were 2,389 points and 295 steals, placing him second and all-time in those categories. Dell Curry attended Virginia Tech for four years, where other stars of his generation, such as Perry Young, Keith Colbert, Bobby Beecher and Al Young, were also stars.

His NBA career began when the Utah Jazz selected him as the 15th overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft. He played only one season in Utah before moving to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1987. He played for the team during the 1987–1988 season.

He was drafted to play for the Charlotte Hornets, one of the two newest teams in the 1988–1989 season. Dell Curry remained with Charlotte for the next eight years. He often came off the bench in games to provide immediate offense.
