Dell Curry (born June 25, 1964), sometimes known as Wardell Stephen Curry I, is an American professional basketball player who played for the NBA from 1986 to 2002.

Early life and education

Wardell Stephen Curry was born Dell Curry on June 25, 1964, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, United States. Harrisonburg is where he spent most of his childhood. The identities of his parents are unknown. He lived in the small community of Grottoes with his four sisters.

He had a strong passion for sports since he was a child. He attended Fort Defiance High School in Fort Defiance, Virginia. He was more interested in sports than academics during his school years.

While in high school, Dell Curry won state championships in basketball and baseball. He regularly practiced pitching in the coach’s cage. He was selected by the Texas Rangers in the high school draft. He competed in the ‘NIT’ competitions in 1983 and 1984, finishing third in the latter.

Dell Curry attended Virginia Tech after completing his undergraduate degree, where he had 295 steals to become the all-time leader in basketball.

Career

Dell Curry played baseball and basketball while attending Virginia Tech. But later in his career, he focused on basketball. After completing his third year at Virginia Tech, he was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the fourteenth round of the 1985 Major League Baseball draft.

His final totals during his tenure at Virginia Tech were 2,389 points and 295 steals, placing him second and all-time in those categories. Dell Curry attended Virginia Tech for four years, where other stars of his generation, such as Perry Young, Keith Colbert, Bobby Beecher and Al Young, were also stars.

His NBA career began when the Utah Jazz selected him as the 15th overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft. He played only one season in Utah before moving to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1987. He played for the team during the 1987–1988 season.

He was drafted to play for the Charlotte Hornets, one of the two newest teams in the 1988–1989 season. Dell Curry remained with Charlotte for the next eight years. He often came off the bench in games to provide immediate offense.

In terms of total points, games played, field goals made/attempted, and shooting percentage, he remains one of the best players in the organization. He spent one season with the Milwaukee Bucks after playing for the Charlotte Hornets, followed by three seasons with the Toronto Raptors, before leaving the NBA.
