Desmond Oluwashola Elliot (born February 4, 1974), known professionally as Desmond Elliot, is a well-known Nigerian actor, director and politician.

He has starred in more than two hundred films, television shows, and soap operas.

Early life and education

Desmond Elliott was born on February 4, 1974 to Mr. and Mrs. Elliott, the son of a Yoruba father from Olowogbowo, Lagos Island, and a mother from Ila, Oshimili North, Delta State.

He received his primary education at the Air Force Primary School in Jos. After completing his primary education, he attended St. John’s College, also in Jos.

Desmond Elliott continued his education and studied Economics. In 2003, he graduated from Lagos State University with a degree in Economics. But this did not stop him from pursuing a career in acting.

Profession

Desmond Elliott was influenced by his friends to become an actor. He began to play roles in soap operas such as “Normal People”, “Too Much” and “Saints and Sinners”.

He is one of the leading actors in the Nigerian film industry and has appeared in over 200 films including Hustlers, Yahoo Millionaires and Atlanta. In 2006, he was nominated for the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Behind Closed Doors.

In 2008, Desmond Elliott co-produced and directed the film Reloaded, which received three nominations at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2009. In 2009 and 2010, he was nominated for Best Actor at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

Additionally, in 2010, Desmond Elliot ran for ambassadorship for the Faces of Hope project, “a non-profit, non-religious, non-political, volunteer-based organization that brings hope to the hopeless,” and if he succeeds in being elected, he will work to address “childhood illiteracy in Nigeria and across Africa.”

In 2014, he was nominated for the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film Finding Mercy.

Political career

In September 2014, Desmond Elliott announced his intention to run for the All Progressives Congress seat in Lagos State House of Assembly. On April 11, 2015, he contested the Surulere constituency election and won.

In October 2020, during the “End SARS” protests, Desmond Elliott was heavily criticized for his alleged support for Nigeria’s Anti-Social Media Bill, an allegation he had denied when the news first broke via social media.

In a video that went viral on the internet, he strongly criticised social media users and influencers and said that social media would destroy the Nigerian government if it was not stopped. His comments sparked a strong reaction among Nigerians on social media, thus giving rise to the popular Nigerian pidgin slang na Desmond Elliot cause am, which means “It’s all Desmond Elliot’s fault”.

However, a few days later, Desmond Elliott came out to apologize. He said: “I let my emotions get the better of me and for that I apologize to anyone who may have been hurt by my previous comments. Please understand that even the best of us make mistakes.

That is why, going forward, I ask all of us to work to constructively engage on the issues that affect us. I pledge to do the same. My participation and work will continue to be driven by the pain of my constituents, the calls for help I continue to receive, and the need to mitigate further destruction and violence. I thank all of you for making your views known, and going forward, I pledge to be even more aware and vigilant. Together, we will build a better Nigeria.”

Desmond Elliott is married to Victoria Elliott and they have four children. They have a happy marriage and have four children, Denzel Elliott, Desmond Elliott Jr., Donald Elliott and Donn Elliott. He is involved in PR for Globacom.

On December 26, 2018, Desmond Elliott and his wife Victoria Elliott celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary.
