The game is set in a science fiction world and features both cooperative and competitive gameplay. Players known as Guardians use special powers to protect humanity from aliens and dark forces. The game has PvE missions, including attacks and raids, as well as a PvP mode with different objectives.
Guardians explore locations, participate in public events, and interact with NPCs. The original Destiny lacked NPC interaction outside of social spaces, but Destiny 2 changes that.
Expansion packs such as Curse of Osiris, Warmind, Forsaken, Shadowkeep, and Beyond Light have added to the story and content. Some extensions are standalone, and the free version of New Light includes the first two extensions. Seasonal passes offer additional content, but some content requires purchase.
