Early life and education
Dickson Poon was born on 19 June 1956 in British Hong Kong. He was raised by his parents, known only to the media as Mr. and Mrs. Dickson, although their full names are unknown. It is unclear whether Dickson grew up with any siblings, as their identities have not been made public.
Poon attended St Joseph’s College in Hong Kong before moving to Uppingham School in England and then to Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he majored in philosophy and economics.
Career
Poon is the executive chairman of Hong Kong-based listed company Dickson Concepts (DCIL), which owns companies including Harvey Nichols and ST Dupont. Through trusts, he controlled 40.13% of DCIL’s voting capital as of 31 March 2008.
Poon founded D&B Films Co., Ltd. with Sammo Hung, which released action and martial arts films such as the In the Line of Duty series, Hong Kong 1941, Legacy of Rage, and over 50 other titles. The company’s last film was Black Cat II: Assassination of President Yeltsin in 1992.
In November 2010, Poon donated £10 million to St Hugh’s College, Oxford, to build the Dickson Poon China Centre, which will bring together scholars from a wide range of China-related fields of study, provide accommodation for the college’s postgraduate students, and house the Bodleian Library’s Chinese Collection.
Two years later, in 2012, Poon donated £20 million to King’s College London to fund the current law faculty, the largest single donation to the college in its history. In recognition of his donation, the law school at King’s College London was renamed the Dickson Poon School of Law.
