Earl Simmons (December 18, 1970 – April 9, 2021) is an American music icon, known internationally by his stage name DMX.
He is a rapper and actor who started his rap career in the early 90s. He is one of the most successful rappers in the history of hip-hop. His best-selling album “…And Then There Was X” was released in 1999.
DMX has sold over 74 million records worldwide and became the first artist to have five consecutive number one albums on the Billboard 200 chart.

early life
DMX was born on December 18, 1970, in a public hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. His father is Joe Buck and his mother is Arnett Simmons. His mother was 19 years old and his father was 18 years old when he was born.
His father, Joe Barker, was absent during his childhood and the rest of his life. DMX took his mother’s last name and she named him Earl Simmons. He has an older sister named Bonita. She is two years older than him. He also has a younger sister named Shayla.
DMX was born into a Christian family and grew up in a Jehovah’s Witness family. During his childhood, he suffered from bronchial asthma. He and his family moved to Yonkers, New York. The family lived in a school project.

While in prison, DMX decided to focus more on his interest in music and began writing rap lyrics in his free time. After being released from prison, he began making and selling his own mixtapes. These mixtapes were based on other artists’ instrumentals.
In 1992, he scored his first success as an artist when he signed a record contract with Columbia Records. He signed with Ruffhouse Records, a subsidiary of the publishing company. Soon after, he released his debut single “Born Loser”. After that, he released his second single “Make A Move” in 1994.
In 1998, DMX released his first hit single, “Get At Me Dog”. This was released after he signed with Def Jam Recordings. The song earned him an RIAA Gold certification. In May 1998, he finally released his debut album, “It’s Dark, and Hell is Hot”. This album included the chart-topping song “Ruff Ryders Anthem”.
After the success of his debut album, DMX started to create more albums. In the past two decades, he has created seven new albums. These albums are Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood (1998), …And There Was X (1999), The Great Depression (2001), Grand Champ (2003), Year of the Dog…Again (2006), Undisputed (2011) and Exodus (2013).
DMX won the 1999 Billboard Music Award for Album of the Year. In 2000, he won the American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist.
As an actor, DMX has appeared in films such as Belly, Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, and Last Hour. He also starred in a reality TV series called DMX: The Soul Of A Man. The show was released in 2006 and aired on BET.
After months of working on his memoir, DMX published the book EARL: The Autobiography of DMX.
