Mulray began his radio career at 2AD in Armidale in September 1975, later moving to Central Coast station 2GO in Gosford. In the mid-1970s he worked at 3AW Melbourne on a show called “Mulray and the Man.“
In the late 1970s, Mulray joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s newly formed rock radio station 2JJ in Sydney, later renamed Triple J. He gained a significant fan base during his time there.
In 1982 he was recruited by Triple M, where he took on the role of breakfast presenter and achieved considerable success, raising the viewership from 2.6 percent to 18 percent.
