Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a video game released in 2024, developed and published by Square Enix. It belongs to the action role-playing game genre and is the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake, which was released in 2020. The new game is the second in a trilogy that aims to remake the classic 1997 PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII.
Similar to its predecessor, Rebirth blends real-time action with strategy and role-playing elements. The storyline follows the events of Rebirth. Players will control the mercenary Cloud Strife and lead a team of characters mainly from the eco-terrorist organization AVALANCHE.
Together, they embark on a journey across the planet to stop the megacorporation Shinra’s plan to harness the Lifestream as an energy source. Their mission also involves stopping Sephiroth, a former elite soldier who aims to unite with the planets to gain greater power.
Development on Rebirth began in November 2019, prior to the release of the Remake, and the game was officially announced in June 2022. Rebirth debuted on PlayStation 5 on February 29, 2024 to critical acclaim. The game continues the legacy of the iconic Final Fantasy series with its engaging gameplay and captivating narrative.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Characters
In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, players will encounter a variety of characters, each with unique abilities and personalities. These characters play a vital role in the game’s storyline and provide players with a diverse gaming experience.
Cloud Strife: Great Swordsmanship
In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Cloud Strife is the default party leader and protagonist. Cloud is known for his sophisticated and dynamic combat skills, wielding his signature Buster Sword and other oversized alternatives with incredible speed and no sense of lag.
Players can further enhance his power by switching between Operator Mode and Punisher Mode, which balance mobility and hard hitting. With familiar powerful weapon abilities like Braver and Triple Slash, playing as Cloud remains a consistently enjoyable experience.
Kisaragi Yuffie: Combat Versatility
Yuffie Kisaragi made her debut as a playable character in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Between Episodes DLC, bringing variety to Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s combat. Yuffie’s combat style is more complex than most other characters, with her being able to unleash a wide range of physical and magical attacks.
Her versatility shines in nearly any fight, able to overcome enemy mobility or resistance. The Synergy Skills introduced in the INTERmission DLC further enhance her combat effectiveness, making Yuffie a well-rounded and attractive choice for players.
Tifa Lockhart: A fast and agile fighter
Tifa Lockhart’s gameplay in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is characterized by speed and agility, making her a fast and furious fighter. With swift movements and combos of blows, Tifa excels at outwitting slower enemies. Her abilities not only add stagger, but also put pressure on enemies, providing opportunities for other characters. Synergy skills grant her additional aerial, blocking, or dodge abilities, increasing the satisfaction of playing as Tifa in battle.
Red XIII: Defense and Offense Balancer
Red XIII’s Revengeance Mode stands out in combat, offering a unique fighting style that balances defense and offense. Defensive play enhances Revenge Mode’s transformation, creating a push-pull dynamic for players. The emphasis on blocking adds depth to Red XIII’s gameplay, making it a solid choice for players who prefer a strategic approach. Mimicking Cloud’s setup, Red XIII’s unique abilities contribute to a varied and engaging combat experience.
Cait Sith: Unconventional Fighting Style
Cait Sith is the most unusual play style of the cute characters in FF7 Rebirth. Cait Sith is armed with a megaphone and has a Moogle companion by his side, and the game includes both single-player and mounted combat. Some key abilities rely on random luck, adding to the unpredictability. Director Naoki Hamaguchi’s personal favorite, Cait Sith appeals to players who prefer a more unusual and unpredictable style of combat.
Barrett Wallace: Long-range tank expert
In Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Barret Wallace is a tank who excels in ranged combat. Equipped with a gun arm, Barret is a great choice for dealing damage to out-of-reach enemies or deploying ranged attacks. While his tank attributes allow him to take hits, he is not as good at dodging as other characters. Barret’s role in ranged combat adds variety, but his gameplay may not be the first choice for players seeking the excitement of melee weapons.
Alice Gainsborough: Magical Power and Support
Aerith Gainsborough is a beloved character from Final Fantasy 7 who relies on spell attacks and a support role in combat. While her magical abilities can be game-changing, they can lack the excitement of more offensive characters. Aerith can heal enemies and add stagger in certain situations, but her standard magic attacks can be less exciting. Still, her importance in a support role makes her a strategic and necessary choice in the playable character lineup.
Sephiroth and Zack Fair: A Brief Gameplay
Sephiroth and Zack Fair were both playable characters in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but were more of a supporting cast. Their screen time was brief, with Sephiroth’s unique Masamune sword giving a unique feel in combat. While fans were excited to be reacquainted with these characters, their limited playtime made them secondary choices compared to the main party members.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gameplay
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second in a trilogy of remakes of the 1997 PlayStation classic, delivering a thrilling gaming experience. Picking up where Final Fantasy VII Remake left off, the game follows protagonist Cloud Strife and his allies in the eco-terrorist organization AVALANCHE as they flee the bustling city of Midgar. Like its predecessor, Rebirth reimagines elements of the original game while enriching character development and expanding the overall narrative.
In terms of gameplay, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth offers a dynamic blend of real-time exploration and combat. The game moves away from the linear progression of the remake of Midgar and introduces a more open environment with objective markers to guide players through the main story quests and side missions.
Players can traverse the world on foot or ride a Chocobo for faster travel. The combat system is based on the action-focused melee and active battle (ATB) system from Final Fantasy VII Remake, with characters using both physical attacks and magic.
The unique “synergy” mechanic first appeared in the DLC “Episode INTERmission”, allowing teammates to synchronize their attacks, adding strategic depth to combat. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth combines exploration, combat, and character development to ensure an immersive and engaging gaming experience.
