Claire and Matt performed the play at the Old Vic in London in June 2020—which was adapted well with “socially distanced performances” amid the coronavirus pandemic to allow children to stay six feet apart.

Recalling the “social distancing play,” Claire recounts the strange experience of rehearsing a play while a stage manager held a six-foot stick between them. Their characters had fought, made up and slept together on stage, now not even allowed to hold hands.

But in defence of her stage manager, Maria Gibbons, Claire explained that the stick was there to ensure physical distancing was maintained under lockdown regulations, while Matt reminded her that the distancing guidelines had “just been reduced to one metre, so break your stick in half!”

Now, back to the first time Claire and Matt met. It was in 2014 on the set of Netflix’s The Crown. Claire—who won the role of a young Elizabeth II—was in the room when Matt arrived for his audition. “She was very generous, and there was something about her that worked,” Matt recalls.

They’ve remained friends ever since. And their incredible on-screen chemistry now shines through in real life, too.

Claire Foy first met her husband Stephen Campbell Morre on the set of the fantasy film Season of the Witch in 2011. After dating for more than 3 years, the two got married in 2014.

The pair then moved to North London, where they endured the worst time of their lives when Stephen was diagnosed with a benign tumour on the pituitary gland at the base of his brain.
