Early life and education

Gennady Golovkin, now 42 years old, was born on April 8, 1982 in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, then part of the Soviet Union.

He is the youngest of four sons of Gennady Golovkin Sr., a Russian coal miner, and Elizaveta Golovkina, a Korean chemistry laboratory assistant.

He grew up in a poor and tough neighborhood, where he learned to fight very early.

His older brothers, Sergey and Vadim, introduced him to boxing when he was 8, often pitting him against older and older boys.
