John Redburne Young, known by his stage name George Young, was born in Scotland on November 6, 1946. He was brought to Australia by his family as a child and later became an Australian citizen. His father, William Young, worked as a cart driver in a rope factory and later operated machines and saws for an asbestos and cement company. During World War II, William Young joined the Royal Air Force as a flight engine mechanic.
After the war, William Young worked as a postman and later as a yardman for a builder. George Young’s mother, Margaret Young, was a stay-at-home mom. She had the same last name as her husband and was born on July 14, 1913. George was the second youngest of four siblings, with three older brothers, Malcolm Young, Alexander Young, and Angus Young, and a sister, Margaret Horsburgh.
