Nancy Lazkani attended and graduated from the University of Utah. A headhunter found her a sales position for an electronics manufacturer. “It was tough because it was commission-based,” she says. “I was terrified.”

Second, always have a Plan B. “Every time we come up with a strategy or do a campaign, Carol will say, ‘Okay. What’s Plan B?’” Lazkani says. “I’ve learned to have a Plan B for everything I do because not everything goes the way you plan. But if you have a Plan B, you’ll be fine.”

In 1991, Nancy moved to Williams Worldwide Television, where she started a short-film division, rising to vice president of communications. Working for the company wasn’t easy. “I worked in a cardboard box,” Lazkani says. “I didn’t have a desk. Everything was so new, I remember almost crying on the way home every day at first, thinking, ‘I don’t understand this advertising business!’”

Within six months, she was promoted to supervisor and within a year, director of communications. Two years later, Nancy was promoted to vice president. Her second mentor, Katie Williams, gave her the opportunity to grow. She left Williams in 1994 and joined Focus Media’s Focus Direct division.

During Nancy’s three years at Focus, she grew the division’s revenue from $3 million to $24 million.

Furthermore, in 1997, she decided to go solo and founded Prime Time Direct with a few partners. The business was quite successful with $19 million in its first two years, she left the company and founded Icon Media Direct in May 2000. Currently, she runs a company with over 100 employees.

“Nowadays, if people upset me or do something unethical, I speak my mind,” she said. “I try to be as tactful as possible, but I have a reputation for integrity and I value my reputation more than anything else.”
