Early life
Joel Netshitenzhe was born in the early 1970s in South Africa.
He was born and raised in the town of Sibasa in the Venda region of South Africa.
He was a victim of Apartheid and participated in many protests against discrimination against black people in South Africa.
Nelson Mandela was greatly influenced by Joel Netshitenzhe. He joined the African National Congress in 1992.

Career
Joel Netshitenzhe is CEO and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of MISTRA, a research institute focused on the country’s strategic challenges.
Mr. Joel Netshitenzhe is a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress and the National Planning Commission. Joel is also a member of the Board of Directors of Nedbank Group. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Life Healthcare Group and CEEF.
Joel Netshitenzhe became the Executive Director of Government Information and Communications Systems in 1998. Prior to his current position, he was the Head of Communications under former President Nelson Mandela.
Mr. Joel Netshitenzhe was appointed to the role of Head of the Policy Coordination and Advisory Services (PCAS) in 2001. Joel Netshitenzhe previously served as the country’s Director of the Government Information and Communications System. He headed the GCIS for eight years (1998-2006).
Joel Netshitenzhe was a key political adviser to former South African President Thabo Mbeki.

Because of his close working relationship with Thabo Mbeki, Joel Netshitenzhe was once considered a potential presidential candidate in the country’s upcoming elections. However, when Thabo Mbeki’s rival Jacob Zuma was elected president of the ruling African National Congress in December 2007, Joel Netshitenzhe’s chances seemed to be fading.
However, he retained his seat on the party’s powerful National Executive Committee, where he served on subcommittees on economic development and political education.
