Early life
Godwin Emefiele is a Nigerian economist. He was born in 1964 on August 4 in Lagos state, Nigeria. He is a native of Ika South, Delta State, Nigeria. He attended Government Primary School in Victoria Island Lagos and graduated in 1978, after which he continued his education at Maryland High School in Maryland, Lagos and graduated in 1984.
He then attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he obtained a degree in Banking and Finance and graduated in June 1984. He went further to obtain a Master’s degree in Finance at the same school and finally graduated in 1986.
He became a lecturer at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and the University of Port Harcourt. He later rose to fame for his contributions to Zenith Bank and that led to his appointment as CBN Governor in 2014 to date.

After that, he held the position of CEO of Zenith Bank, then was promoted to the position of Deputy CEO and then Group CEO.
He was then assigned the responsibility of supervising major branches of Zenith Bank in Lagos and Northern Nigeria. His enormous impact has made the bank one of the leading financial institutions in Africa. Therefore, the bank has been authenticated both domestically and internationally.
He was subsequently appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan on 3 June 2014 as the 10th indigenous Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and 11th Director of the CBN, thereby succeeding Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. He was later reappointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2019 for a second term.
Godwin Emefiele’s impact in Nigeria’s banking sector is what sets him apart and has earned him so many awards such as the Public Service Award; The Sun Awards 2017, Financial Policy Strategist of the Year; Blue Impact Series 2018 and Best CBN Governor of the Decade; Coalition of Civil Society Organizations and Media Executives for Good Governance in Nigeria (COMEGG) 2017 among others.
