Even the then US President, Bill Clinton, wrote a letter of protest to the Prime Minister when the journalist who wrote critically about the case, Murray Hiebert, was jailed for contempt of court.
Hiebert is the first journalist to be jailed in Malaysia for contempt of court for his reporting, and the first in a Commonwealth country in 50 years.
It is believed that the main reason the case was brought to court was because Chandra was held in contempt because the article described her as a “petty, vengeful woman”.
In 2014, Chandra was accused of trying to extort RM10 million from a senior IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh, Sachin Sinha, and his family. Sinha, the commissioner of higher education, had complained to the Shri Ram Chandra Mission (SRCM), Chennai, a spiritual organisation with which Chandra was affiliated, for harassing him and his family and demanding money from them.
Sinha claimed that he and his family were followers of SRCM, but they decided to leave the organization after discovering some irregularities and illegal activities.
He alleged that Chandra and several other SRCM officials threatened him and his family with dire consequences if they did not pay them RM10 million.
He also alleged that Chandra tried to influence him to favour the SRCM in some official matters. SRCM officials denied the allegations and claimed that Sinha was trying to defame the organisation.
