Heather Sutherland is a British historian, author and broadcaster. She is best known for her work on Indonesian history and is the author of several books on the subject, including The Making of a Bureaucratic Elite: The Colonial Transformation of the Javanese Priyayi (1979) and The Javanese Sultanate: A History (2007).
In 1984, Sutherland was appointed Professor of Southeast Asian History at the University of Sydney. She retired from the University of Sydney in 2008 but continued to write and lecture on Indonesian history.
