Illinois judge blocks Donald Trump from 2024 presidential ballot

A recent ruling by an Illinois judge has barred former President Donald Trump from appearing on the state’s 2024 Republican primary ballot. The decision, issued by Cook County Circuit Judge Tracie Porter, cited Trump’s alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot as grounds for disqualification.

Judge Porter overturned the Illinois State Board of Elections’ previous dismissal of a challenge against Trump, citing the 14th Amendment’s disqualification clause. Court documents obtained by Fox News reveal that Porter directed the board to remove Trump’s name from the ballot or void any votes cast for him because he violated the constitutional provision.

The ruling contrasts with a decision made by the Illinois Board of Elections just a month earlier, when it upheld Trump’s candidacy despite allegations of rebellion from a group of Illinois voters.

However, implementation of Porter’s decision has been temporarily halted until Friday, giving Trump’s legal team the opportunity to appeal to the Illinois Court of Appeals, the First District or the Illinois Supreme Court.

Based on ReutersA spokesman for the Trump campaign criticized the ruling, calling it “aUnconstitutional” and confirmed his intention to appeal immediately.
