Rhonda Eva Harris, known as Vanzant, was born in a Brooklyn taxi on September 13, 1953. She grew up with relatives after her mother died of breast cancer when she was 2 years old. Sarah Jefferson and Horace Harris are Iyanla’s proud parents. She became a Yoruba priestess in 1983 and was given the title “Iyanla,” which means “great mother.”

Iyanla holds degrees from Medgar Evers College, Virginia Union University, and the City University of New York School of Law. She also holds a Master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology from Santa Monica College. She is currently an ordained minister and resides in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
